Tourmaline is a gem stone. When heated it's capable of emitting negative charges (electrons). Hair tends to acquire positive charge because of the way it's made and when similarly charged hair strands repel each other, flyaway hair happens. When the heat from a hair dryer/ straightener comes through tourmaline, it carries a lot of negative charges which neutralizes the excess positive charge of hair, making it look smooth, shiny and less frizzy.
